Syrphid Fly - Eupeodes volucris - male

Syrphid Fly - Eupeodes volucris - Male
Desert Hot Springs, Riverside County, California, USA
March 31, 2008
Funny elongated hind end on this one.

Moved from Syrphid Flies.

A male Eupeodes volucris for sure!

Eupeodes volucris, I think
Look at this one, Eupeodes volucris

rather similar, however to Scaeva pyrastri:

but I think it is the first one.

Looks like a fun time in the desert. I used to live in nearby Palm Springs, but did not do much insect watching then. Good to see you are still active on BugGuide.

Thanks Patrick,
I think you're first one is right. My specimen doesn't seem to have the swollen forhead mentioned for the second one. I may wait a little longer to see what the fly experts have to say. Thanks for the help.
