blue and black fly - Copecrypta ruficauda

blue and black fly - Copecrypta ruficauda
Chipera Prairie, Winneshiek County, Iowa, USA
September 13, 2019
Size: ~9 mm
I hope I'm putting this fly in the right category, based on wing venation as I viewed it, and I'd like to call it a tachinid fly, but my fly ID skills need a lot more practice to be that confident. As I looked at tachinid flies for a possible match, a lot of this fly's characteristics matched up with Copecrypta ruficauda, but a lot more flies in the Tachinidae family looked similar too.

Wow, that's wonderful news, John! Thanks so much for confirming that this tachinid fly is C. ruficauda! I'm slowly building up my local fly photo library so I can figure out mystery flies better in the future.
