Pasimachus marginatus

Pasimachus marginatus
Horton's Pond, Chatham County, North Carolina, USA
May 7, 2005
Size: 29 mm
I found this huge ground beetle running across a trail during the daytime. I captured it and posed it for photography. I keyed it to species based on Ciegler, Ground Beetles of South Carolina (1).
Image updated from full-size file 7/2/16, in this case, also a shot on a different background.
Size updated--it was actually 29 mm from tip of elytra to base of mandibles (not 32 mm, as previously stated).

What a beast. I wish Pasimachus were in my area.

Impressive mandibles.
Looks like it could pierce skin with that front-end equipment.
