Green Form Caterpillar - Limenitis arthemis

Green Form Caterpillar - Limenitis arthemis
Near Ruraldale, Upshur County, West Virginia, USA
May 17, 2005
Feeding on willow. Beautiful caterpillar with green markings and tiny blue spots.

One guide says the caterpillars of Red-Spotted Purple and Viceroy are identical. Other guides describe minor differences. I would bet this is a Red-Spotted Purple, because that butterfly is very, very common in this county, and the Viceroy is not.
