Ceratophaga vicinella

Ceratophaga vicinella
Archbold Biological Station, Highlands County, Florida, USA
December 25, 2019
There were a few silken tubes of this species attached to an old gopher tortoise shell in a rosemary bald. This caterpillar was right at the entrance to one of the tubes, so I carefully teased it out for a photo. A very exciting find, as the caterpillar of this species is a specialist feeder on the keratin scutes of gopher tortoises, which are declining across most of their range. The moth is thus dependent on a population of tortoises that is healthy enough to produce at least one dead tortoise per year (Deyrup & Carrel 2012).
