Spotted Tussock Moth

I am a biochemist at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon. I am doing some research on the Spotted Tussock Moth, Lophocampa maculata. This species ranges across all of northern North America. I am using local, west coast individuals but would like to investigate some comparative features with Eastern individuals. I am looking for someone who could supply me with either eggs or first instar larvae of this species from an Eastern Canada or Northeastern U.S. location. I realize this will be difficult to find (likely an understatement) but I sure would appreciate it if I could locate a source. If anyone has any ideas about how to do this, I would appreciate hearing them.

Thanks in advance.

Tussock Moth eggs
Please see the eggs on this page. They may not be the type you are looking for, but just in case.....I do know where they are on a Norway spruce not far from my home.

Eggs
nancy,

Thanks for your response. Unfortunately, from my past experience with Lophocampa maculata in Oregon, these eggs are not likely that species. L. maculata lays eggs in midsummer which hatch in about 8-10 days. The caterpillars develop over the rest of the summer, overwinter in cocoons, and emerge in June/July. So, one would not expect to find eggs at this time of year for this species. Actually, L. maculata is not a true tussock moth as I understand it, in spite of its common name.

Thanks however for your interest. If you or anyone you know find any this summer, drop me an email.

Thanks again.
