Unidentified Egg/Larva - Curculionidae??

Unidentified Egg/Larva - Curculionidae??
Sharon, Litchfield County, Connecticut, USA
January 12, 2020
I found a bunch of eggs in some very rotten wood....This photo shows the larva from one of the eggs.

The eggs were about 5 mm long and were hard - in fact, I wondered if they might be seeds at first. I took a couple home and cracked one open under my digital scope to examine the larva.

Gall wasp larvae
These (to me) seem most likely to be the larva of a cynipid wasp. Several species make small, seed-like galls that drop to the forest floor where they'll over winter under debris and/or leaf litter until the following spring, but how so many ended up inside rotted wood is a bit of surprise. I wonder if ants hoarded them?
