polyphemus moth caterpillar
Could I have seen this in Northern New Mexico in a forest of mixed evergreen and deciduous trees? My caterpillar was 2 1/4 inches long by 1/2 inch diameter. Body bumps and feet were vivid orange. Head end was orange and tail end was more rosy violet.

yes
yes I did some research on your theory and found your caterpillar can live there, if you have it now keep feeding deciduous leaves and your caterpillar will be fine
