Size: ~8 mm
This fly looks just like examples of A. ehrmanii that I checked out on the BugGuide pages, but since it has not been reported to BugGuide from Iowa before, it may be something different.

Thanks so much for confirming that this lean and furry bee fly is Aldrichia ehrmanii, Ken! It is nice to add that species to Iowa on the distribution map.
