Insect attacted to light - Ochlerotatus fitchii - Male
Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
May 18, 2005
This insect was about twice the size of a mosquito. I was interested to see its complex antennae.

no, thank YOU
for sharing a mosquito photo. Yours is one of only handful

Mosquito
This is probably some species of mosquito in the genus Anopheles. Some species in the genus are the carriers of malaria, but the one in your picture does not look like A. quadrimaculatus, the chief vector of malaria in North America. Human malaria is transmitted only by females of the genus Anopheles. Of the 430 some Anopheles species, only 30-40 transmit malaria in nature.

Mosquito
Thank you, Chris. Luckily there is no malaria in the Ottawa region!

Mosquito
It looks like a mosquito in the family Culicidae but I am not not sure. How big was it?

Mosquito
It was 9mm long from the tip of the antennae to the tip of the abdomen.

It looks similar...
to a mosquito I shot, which I thought may be a male:

Mosquito
Yes, it looks very similar to yours, Tony. Thanks.
