 Ephydridae? - Lispe

Ephydridae? - Lispe
Pena Blanca Lake, Santa Cruz County, Arizona, USA
January 19, 2020
Size: 8 mm to tip of wings
Coordinates: 31.770773, -111.034351
Elevation: 3,008 ft
Many of these flies were chasing each other (I suppose in the name of love) near small ponds filled with algae. They were adept at briefly walking on water, but spent most of their time on rocks near or in the middle of ponds and stream. They were almost impossible to catch with my net and I had to resort to slowly approaching them with a vial. This method worked better, but I only managed to catch 3 flies out at least 30 attempts.
