Eureka! I was way off with Pseudopityophthorus. This is Gnathotrichus pilosus.

Interesting
My first thought is Pseudopityophthorus, but it doesn't really resemble any of the ones known from Arizona. Perhaps P. granulatus, but I certainly can't be sure from these images. Lot's of rare scolytines in Arizona. Are you able to get shots of the declivity and maybe the frons and antennae? Also, I'd be happy to examine the specimen and try to ID to species if you are able to send it my way.

thank you Marc
I will try to post some better photographs and try the key out myself now I know which direction to go. Thank you for your offer, let me see if I can put a specimen loan request in
