Hodges #8392 - Phlyctaina irrigualis - Phlyctaina irrigualis - Female
Tallahassee, Leon County, Florida, USA
January 23, 2020
Size: Forewing ≈12mm
Attracted to back light on a mild 15C evening on the second day with daytime temperatures reaching ≈20C. During the early mornings of the preceding two days the temperature had dropped to ≈1C below freezing. Considering that most moths of this species did not survive a night in our refrigerator (≈5C), and that this individual appeared to be in perfect condition when caught, maybe it had survived as a pupa covered and protected by a layer of litter in the nearby woods, and eclosed during the day.

To previous viewers of this page: The originally listed 2010 as the year of the encounter was an unfortunate typo for which I apologize.
