red wasp - Polistes metricus

red wasp - Polistes metricus
New Orleans, Louisiana, USA
October 5, 2019
The friend who took this photo was told that it was a red wasp, but I wondered if there was a way for a casual observer to know if it was Polistes carolina, P. annularis, P. metricus or something else. I don't actually know which day it was but it was October 2019.

I have the same one here in south East Texas. Every evening it comes out to lick the leaves of the small palm I have on my porch. It’s so calm and does a little dance sometimes when I say hello.
