Diaperine fungus beetle - Diaperis maculata Nashua, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA Size: about 5.6 mm
I found this and several other D. maculata in a rearing container of very dry conk and bracket fungus scraps that I periodically tear into smaller scraps to see what I can find living inside. Many fungus and wood eating larvae are apparently able to extract moisture very efficiently from the air they breath, hence are able to grow to maturation inside very dry foodstuffs.
