Cecropia Moth - Hyalophora cecropia

Cecropia Moth - Hyalophora cecropia
Saint Augustine, St. Johns County, Florida, USA
April 15, 2008
I tried to understand the guidelines between moths and butterflies but I'm confused because this one has features of both. Patterned like a butterfly but has feathery antennae.

Antennae are a very strong clue
patterns are at best a weak one - there are many drab butterflies and many colorful moths. That the wings are held open at rest, rather than closed above its back, is another indication it's a moth.

Cecropia Moth
Hyalophora cecropia - A real beauty.
