Collembola - Vesicephalus crossleyi
North Carolina, USA
March 31, 2008
Size: 1-2 mm
A colleague found this on some moss. Note that it is in ethanol. Can anyone identify this to family? Thanks!

Moved from Vesicephalus occidentalis. (Whoops!)
Frans: You may have figured this out by now, but just in case -- no one is alerted when you edit a pre-existing comment. I just happened to stumble on this one, a year and a half later.

Thanks
for pointing this out.
The system can be improved! ;-)

Moved from Sminthuridae.

Vesicephalus crossleyi
At first I assumed it was Sminthurus. But after checking the literature the best match is Vesicephalus crossleyi.
Vescicephalus is a difficult genus to place in a family. Currently it has been placed in Katiannidae by convention, although it has also characteristics of Sminthuridae.
Vesicephalus have a special light sensitive paired organ inbetween the eyeclusters. In the picture it is out of focus, so hard to recognize.

Sorry for the confusion caused, Charley...
