Odd marks on leaf - Danaus plexippus

Odd marks on leaf - Danaus plexippus
Grimsby, ON, Ontario, Canada
July 11, 2019
I was photographing a Monarch caterpillar and didn't notice these markings on the leaf behind it until afterwards.
Pretty sure it wasn't the caterpillar that made them. Was it some sort of insect that created this pattern?

Moved from ID Request.

This is in fact the typical feeding pattern of an early-instar monarch caterpillar.
