Found (dead?) in a cut section of red maple firewood from our yard that was felled and split in early January. Body is 2.5 cm long; ovipositor is 1 cm. Chamber is at least 5" deep (i.e., away from the bark) into this section of trunk.

Moved from ID Request.

Not a larva (see image here). And it doesn't really look like a pupa either. Rather this appears to be fully winged, and thus an adult.

Thanks!
Thank you Ken. I didn't realize that the adults burrowed. I thought they laid their eggs on the trunk and took off. I need to look more into their biology.

The adults don't burrow...
...but larvae pupate and transform into adults there. Then they emerge to mate, lay eggs and complete the cycle.

Got it!
I see--that seems like a long time to squeeze into a tunnel (after transforming into an adult) with wings. I think they emerge in late summer. Very cool. This was had many inches of chewing left to reach the outside. Thanks Ken.

Photo added
Ken, I added another photo showing the tunnel as that may be informative.
