Trapdoor Spider - Myrmekiaphila - Rome, Floyd County, Georgia, USA April 8, 2008
An adult female Trapdoor Spider of the genus Myrmekiaphila. This is typically how they are seen at night, patiently waiting at the entrances of their burrows for a passing meal. In order to even get close to one, you must tread carefully and quietly. Otherwise, it will detect your movement and dart back into the inner recesses of its lair and thus out of sight.
