Size: 14-20mm roughly
The color is off, but it looked something like this (white balance is on the wrong setting)

Interesting! California type Podibrus!
And California is where I am.
But I am just interested in how it is differentiated from Podabrus pruinosus, such as the one Tim Moyer pointed to.

BTW what does * denote?
You guys use a lot of shorthand that I don't always have a good guess for.
I also wanted to add a comment that I am afraid that the color looks very bad. I should have said so originally! The surface that the beetle is on is yellow in color, and in the photo looks almost white! This sort of thing happens when I don't have the WB set properly. I can only guess that the beetle, in real life had a little more yellow, and so may have appeared a bit more orange.

Sure can!
In general, if some editor removes one of my photos and places it at a higher level, I assume it is to correct a mistake, but I have to say when a photo is moved without explanation I am not sure if it was even intended to be moved. Genus Podabrus appears to be correct, however, if not, someone will please let me know!

Beetle with a traveling Jones!
Just notice that this guy has been moving around a lot. If it was mistakenly moved to the Podabrus pruinosus page would you mind commenting on what the problem with that identification is. I certainly appreciate any corrections!

Possible leatherwing....
I'm no expert on these but check in the guide under Genus Cantharis. If I identified it properly these beetles feed on aphids.
