Scolytinae, Banded Elm Bark Beetle, dorsal - Scolytus schevyrewi

Scolytinae, Banded Elm Bark Beetle, dorsal - Scolytus schevyrewi
Blankenship Prairie, Woodbury County, Iowa, USA
July 30, 2014
Size: 3.4 mm
Not one to throw anything away (Yes, I'll take the vial of insects), I recently came into possession of a few insects in small vial from a trap set for bees in a Loess Hills prairie remnant. It contained mostly long-legged flies but also 1 syrphid, 4 other flies, 5 bees, 1 male strepsiptera, 1 weevil and this beetle.

Nice find
Although this beetle is fairly common and widespread, there are no records from Iowa. Not surprising, as it has been collected in all the surrounding states except Wisconsin.

Thanks.
I'd hoped the ID was correct.
I'm kind of big on taking other folks by-catch but that can get out of hand.
