Unknown insect sign on leaf of American Beech - Acalitus ferrugineum

Unknown insect sign on leaf of American Beech - Acalitus ferrugineum
Cocagne Island, Kent County, New Brunswick, Canada
February 4, 2020
I noted these dark markings on the undersides of a tiny percentage of wintering American Beech leaves in mature hardwood forest. Could they be the result of leaf mining or perhaps the remains of egg clusters? Third photo shows view of top side of leaf held up to light.
