Elachiptera

Elachiptera
Great Falls, C&O Canal, Montgomery County, Maryland, USA
February 11, 2020
Size: body 2.3mm
Keys out to Elachiptera using the MND chloropid key (1). Using Sabrosky's 1948 key (2) supplemented with the new couplets from Sabrosky & Valley (3), this one appears to key out to Elachiptera erythropleura. It looks like the one example in the guide and appears to fit Sabrosky's description of the species (1). However, 4 of the 5 examples at BOLD have brighter and more yellow pleura (here). The specimens Sabrosky lists include some from an area just south of where I found this one.

TIA

Moved
Moved from Flies.

Near costata
It should fall in the Elachiptera costata group but it does not match any named species. Maybe it's undescribed, maybe the species are more variable than Sabrosky thought.

thanks
I agree, it doesn't quite fit Sabrosky's description, particularly in lack of pollen stripes on the notum.
