And I see the Balabans have already nailed it -- Mangora, looking at the Guide, that explains the "missing" head. See http://bugguide.net/node/view/98264/bgimage.

(Actually, I think I had some small Mangora on my Berlin balcony last year, on a lavender plant... I'll go take a look in Picasa.)

 
And here's a European cousin
Here is M. acalypha, not in the Guide, so apparently not found in NA:http://spinnen-forum.de/artikel/usergal/kevin_pfeiffer/P1010588.JPG

In German it's called the Streifenkreuzspinne; it's also found in GB, but I've not seen an English-language common name for it, yet.
