Thanks for confirming that this syrphid fly is Orthonevra nitida, Bill! I thought it might be, but not having seen it in the field before, I wanted to make sure about my tentative ID. It's nice to know that is the only Orthonevra species I will find in Iowa.

 
The only Orthonevra with such
The only Orthonevra with such exotic eye pattern, that is. There are other Orthonevra found in Iowa but with a single thin horizontal stripe dividing the eyes.

Thanks for the additional information, Bill. Yes, I did see there is at least one Orthonevra species that's been found in Iowa with a blue body and red eyes.
