Pterostichus (Argutor)
is my first reaction. Pronotum closeup without trace of basal bead favors P. commutablis.

ID
Thank you! Looks perfect. What characters would you need to see for a species ID? I have the specimen. :)

Perpendicular dorsal habitus plus pronotum closeup
are sufficient images for making a reasonably reliable species determination in the majority of carabid beetles, including this one. Some species may require ventral habitus plus closeups of other body parts. It helps a lot when images are high resolution and expandable like these and when body lengths (mandible tip to posterior tip) are measured in millimeters.
The
commutablis-praetermissus
species complex differs from other
Pterostichus
by this combination: Elytra with three dorsal punctures and without scutellar striae; Pronotum broad with well-rounded hind angles and with bilateral linear impressions deep and long. The three species in
Argutor
are distinguished by Bousquet & Webster (2004) in the article
Review of the Nearctic species of the Holarctic subgenus Argutor
. A free PDF is available by searching
Google Scholar
for the title.

Article
Thanks! I read the article. The pictures are wonderful and it's easy to see differences side by side like that. I think P. commutablis looks like the right ID. I'll try to get pictures like the ones in the article and will post them tonight or tomorrow to confirm.
