thanks Kyle!
so for clarification, is G. picta no longer considered a unique species making G. fennahi the only option for hoppers that look like this in the east?

basically
this will be a bit of a complicated change for me to make on the site, so for now I'm only doing this for new entries.

wow
that is a substantial and interesting change. i remember reading your comment, but i hadn’t fully registered the scope of it. is there a publicly available paper describing the synonymy and how that was found? and why they were separate in the first place? makes me wonder about other apparently identical-looking species. i wish i could help! i’ve been trying to clean up a bit of iNat going state by state; this is good to know.

I was told
"This species complex has been a mess for a long time. Young (1977) couldn’t find any consistent morphological differences among the species he treated as synonyms of coccinea but Hamilton decided to resurrect some of them based on somewhat dubious criteria.

G. fennahi and G. coccinea can easily be distinguished based on the structure of the male genital capsule but the other temperate North American species Hamilton recognized were separated based on differences in the shape and size of apodemes at the base of the male abdomen that don’t seem very clear cut."

Thank you!
always learning, always moving. waiting for DNA barcoding to mix it all up again.
