While there are strong simila
While there are strong similarities to a pupa, I think this is something totally different, as no insect pupae have this morphology. If this were a pupa we'd at least see wings on the exuviae.

Maybe a bee sting?

 
It didn't make sense to me
but I like the idea of a bee sting.

Here was an ovipositor stuck in a tree

so it's a possibility.
