Birch Dagger Moth - Acronicta betulae

Birch Dagger Moth - Acronicta betulae
Bowie, Prince George's County, Maryland, USA
May 20, 2005

So this is what
this species looks like! I've been trying to 'squeeze' some of my innotata into betulae but I can see now that mine are all innotata.

Anthony W. Thomas

Much to my surprise.........
I've had this species for a year, Tony, and incorrectly placed it as A. innotata on the MPG Plate (and on my personal website). It wasn't until I rechecked the situation last night that I discovered the difference between Birch Dagger and Unmarked Dagger. Covell clearly states that Birch is the only Dagger in our area that has a sharp right angle in the lower part of the pm. line. MPG could use a clearer pinned specimen photo of A. betulae as well as another live photo of A. innotata.
