Grasshopper nymph - Melanoplus ponderosus

Grasshopper nymph - Melanoplus ponderosus
Sand Springs, Osage County, Oklahoma, USA
April 27, 2008
Size: 6mm (1/4")
Please help with ID.

Moved to species, with
the caution that it might be wrong. It has the distinctive "look" of this species, and probably is it, but it's very hard to be 100% certain with nymphs of this genus.

Moved from Nymphs.

Melanoplus species
Pretty certain it's this genus, but it's newly hatched, and these little ones are so poorly documented in the literature that there isn't much help in identifying them. There are a very few that I can usually tell when this young, but you have a lot in your part of the world that I've never watched grow up. Best bet is to raise them up and see what they turn into. I expect that it is M. ponderosus, based primarily on the coloration; plus, your previous posts are a good clue.

Moved
Acrididae, but I can't help beyond that.
