January wasp (indoors) - Auplopus

January wasp (indoors) - Auplopus
Amherst, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, USA
January 28, 2020
First Guide record for January. I was sitting in front of my computer at home, trying to work, when this critter appeared on my desk at a decidedly un-wasp-like time of the year. Sloan Tomlinson identified it to genus in the FaceBook group "Insects and Spiders of New England". I read elsewhere in here that these critters often nest in foundation cracks and so emerge inside houses, probably explaining why it emerged in the middle of winter.
