Size: 4.5cm long
Cut down sugar maple tree, core (middle) area was full of dark brown/black fine soil-like material and these larvae were frozen inside individual "pockets" within the material.

Osmoderma scabra
Really has to be Osmoderma. I think Osmoderma scabra is the most likely although Osmoderma eremicola would also be possible. Funny, I just posted two images: Photo#1811476 and Photo#1811471, where I commented on the association of this species with Sugar Maple. If you put them in a container with that same fine black rotten wood, they might reform their pupal chambers (the "pockets" you mentioned), and the adults should emerge in the next month or so depending on the temperature.
