Any chance this is a mating pair of walkingsticks? Perhaps Anisomorpha spp.?

Yes, this is a pair of A. buprestoides.
From what I understand, the males attach themselves to females at an early age, before they're even mature. They can be separated but the males lock back on as soon as they can. It's almost comical.

Hello! Fairly sure this is the related A. ferruginea, due to the lack of prominent orange stripes on the body.
