NEDSA Riverine Clubtails - Stylurus amnicola - male - female

NEDSA Riverine Clubtails - Stylurus amnicola - Male Female
Riverfront Conservation Area, Hampden County, Massachusetts, USA
August 5, 2018
The Northeast Chapter of the Dragonfly Society of the Americas was asked by The Nature Conservancy to search for this species on their recently acquired tract, the Fannie Stebbins Wildlife Refuge, during our 2018 annual meeting. We were unable to find the species within Stebbins, probably due to its difficult river access, but Kirsten Martin joined the group and informed us that she had found an amnicola exuvia just outside the refuge. We followed her to the site and found three dragons fairly easily, including two in "the wheel", all basking in the sun along the northern edge of the lawn, several feet up in the dense vegetation. Somebody netted the pair, during which they separated. Peter Hazelton of the state NHESP was present and kept at least one specimen (the species is state-listed as endangered).
