Provia argentata? - Provia argentata

Provia argentata? - Provia argentata
Mojave National Preserve, San Bernadino County, California, USA
March 22, 2020
Size: ~17.5 mm TL
Found at Hole in the Wall Campground. Noticed this one early morning resting on the picnic table where I had the Coleman lantern placed to attract moths the night before. I suspect it was attracted to the lantern, never made it to the moth sheet and ended up spending the very chilly night in place. I could not find any images of P. argentata in resting position, but this seems to match up well with the one image of this species on MPG, those shown on Barcode of Life, and the image shown in Moths of Western North America (Powell & Opler, 2009). Hoping I have the ID correct and did not overlook a more common species.

MPG Photo Permission Request
I'm adding Leslie Goethals images to Moth Photographers Group (MPG) and I'd like to know if I might also have permission to use this and possibly your other BugGuide photos? Please send me an email if you are interested in contributing photos to MPG and I will set up an account for your images.

Provia argentata
Hi
I do think this is Provia argentata. A few were attracted to my porch light last year (2019) and again this year (2020), same time period. I've been haunted by this moth as it's such a beautiful moth & it was hard to find info on it.

I had a hard time identifying it until today when I saw the plate in Powell & Opler's Moths of Western North America. I then went to MPG, BOLD, and then BugGuide and saw your observation. Although "my" moth's colors are quite bold, the markings are distinctive and the same as this moth.

In any case, I thought you might be interested. If so, here is the link.

Yes
They both look good. The only question left is: Where do we put the genus in the guide? MPG has it listed (10025)(by Hodges#) in subfamily Cuculliinae.
We will have to check on the latest changes, as to where exactly to put this new genus into the family. (tribe/subtribe etc) I sent Steve Nanz and Kyle Austin a message. I'm sure that they will know.
