question, John Carr, please?
different fly question:
I've read that Hermetia illucens adults do not have mouthparts, but I'm seeing what looks like labella. Is this some different structure for this species?

 
Mouth
I hadn't heard that Hermetia lack mouthparts. Even flies that don't need to feed as adults usually have some external structures.

These guys occasionally show up on my butterfly sponges, and I had the impression that they were feeding (nectaring) on the sponges.

 
I can confirm ...
that these guys do at least drink and nectar, as I am observing this in my backyard.
