early-season ichneumon wasp

early-season ichneumon wasp
Lake Meyer Park, Winneshiek County, Iowa, USA
April 5, 2019
Size: ~10 mm
This ichneumon wasp shows up very early in the spring. They fly low to the ground when looking for possible hosts, I suppose, and sometimes stop at sap wounds on trees to feed. These wasps are quite common before vegetation starts to green up.
