I am thinking the pronounced stripes are an imaging effect.

I added another shot if it helps any. The stripe is less pronounced but the lower half of the beetle is unfortunately shadowed.

that second image is more 'typical' thanks! I am more comfy with my ID now. I collected this species in the Atlanta area when I lived there.
