Palmetto Weevil - Rhynchophorus cruentatus - male

Palmetto Weevil - Rhynchophorus cruentatus - Male
Carolina Beach State Park, Carolina Beach, New Hanover County, North Carolina, USA
April 19, 2020
Size: Approx. 3cm
Found at the CABE Visitor Center, a first record for the park and possibly North Carolina. It flew up and landed on my park vehicle. Sabal minor occurs naturally in Carolina Beach State Park. Sabal palmetto, while not found in this park, does grow naturally at Bald Heald Island Natural Area approximately 15 Miles to the south. Various palm cultivars may be found in residential settings only .25 miles or so east of the park visitor center.
