fly with orange palps - Lispe

fly with orange palps - Lispe
Lake Meyer Park, Winneshiek County, Iowa, USA
April 16, 2020
Size: ~7 mm
I'm not sure if these photos show enough details to narrow this muscid fly ID down or not, but the orange palps seemed distinctive. I can't remember seeing that feature on a fly around here before.

Lispe
Big white palps (at least from some angles) make this Lispe.

Lispe
Thanks so much for narrowing this muscid fly down to the genus Lispe, John! I looked back through my photo files and found what is likely the same species that I sent to BugGuide on April 15, 2019, only a day earlier than this one! You identified that fly as Lispe too, in the tentaculata group. I think I'll be able to remember this distinctive early-season fly in the future!
