wasp..?? - Agonocryptus discoidaloides - Female
Virginia Beach, Virginia, USA
April 27, 2008
Watched her on this tree for awhile. She was sticking it with her ovipositor thingy!! Was very interesting to watch.

Moved
Moved from Cryptinae.

Moved
Moved from Ichneumon Wasps.

Looks like a ...
female Ichneumon wasp laying eggs.

Trying to narrow her down....
So, finally dug out my favorite refernce book, and think she is a either Rhyssa lineolata or Rhyssa persuasoria.....anyone able to figure this out? hehehe

Not Rhyssa.
I believe the species you are referring to are European for starters...This is likely something in the Gelinae subfamily (aka Cryptinae). Moving there for now.

hmmm...
That would be weird since the guide im using is Insects Their Natural History and Diversity w/ A photographic guide to insects of Eastern North America..hehehe.. the Rhyssa pics seem the closest, that's why I choose them..Guess ill have to do more homework!!

Female Ichneumon wasp
The female Ichneumon wasp finds a larva of a wood wasp. She drills a hole into the branch and stings the larva, then deposits her egg directly onto it. Her egg will hatch and then feed on its wood wasp host.
