Big red wasp fly Florida - Physoconops excisus - female

Big red wasp fly Florida - Physoconops excisus - Female
University of South Florida, Tampa, Hillsborough County, Florida, USA
April 13, 2020
This keys to Physoconops excisus. The third antennal segment is long, the cheeks are dark or reddish, the pollinose post-vertical stripe is complete, and the facial grooves are yellowish. While it was alive, it was difficult to see the post-vertical stripe as complete, complicating identification. After being preserved, however, the stripe was much more visible.
