Scolytus piceae

Scolytus piceae
Bigelow Preserve, 45.1320, -70.2033, Somerset County, Maine, USA
Size: 3 mm
RReared from dead Balsam Fir (Abies balsamea). Alpine/boreal habitat around 2500 feet. Wood brought indoors March 3, 2020. Adults emerged March 10-30, 2020. Kindly ID'd by Robert Acciavatti and Robert Androw of the USDA and CMNH. According to Bright (1976), fir is a rare host. 6 adults emerged in comparison to 2 Crypturgus borealis, about 100 Cryphalus ruficollis, and over 1000 Pityokteines sparsus (also ID'd by Acciavatti and Androw). Sorry about the poor photos. I will not even try to post the Crypturgus and Cryphalus as these are much too small for my camera set up and skills.
