There is a hive of these bees in the woods behind my backyard. They live in the ground and have a lot of entrance holes. I can try to get a better picture if needed for ID.

Andrena (Melandrena) obscuripennis Smith
An interesting new state record for Virginia! There are no verified records of this species from anywhere except MD (unpublished), NC, GA, and FL, so please try to document this species further next year if possible. If you have more photos please post them. It would be great if you could obtain a good series of specimens if you have a large population. The AMNH has only one female. The nesting biology is entirely unknown so a biological study would be worthwhile.
To my knowledge no other eastern Andrena has such black wings and entirely orange legs. This is the female.
You could find MANY additional new state records for VA in Newport News

Thanks for the info
Exciting news and I do have one more picture. I believe both of these pictures were actually taken by a friend, Jason Widlacki, who was also present when we found the bees. We swapped pictures so I'm not sure. He might have more pictures of these. I will definately check the place out when I'm back in Virginia.

Andrenidae.
Quite certain this is a species of Andrena. Really messy family, though.
