Mantid parasitoids - Podagrion

Mantid parasitoids - Podagrion
World Birding Center at Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park , Hidalgo County, Texas, USA
August 3, 2007
Could have sworn I'd posted these before, but cannot find them here, so I guess my memory failed me again. Also cannot recall who identified these for me, apologies and thanks to whomever it was... Anyway, this mantis egg case appeared on the brick outside wall of the park store, in the breezeway. I eventually noticed the tiny wasps all over it, and snapped a few pics; unsure if the wasps hatched out of this ootheca, or had gathered to parasitoidize it, or a bit of both.

Four mantis species have been documented from Bentsen. This ootheca probably came from a Stagmomantis carolina. Of the other three species, two are probably too small to have produced an ootheca of this size (Oligonicella mexicana and Thesprotia graminis), and the third makes one of a very different shape (Phyllovates chlorophaea).
