Hemaris diffinis
Based on dark upper surfaces of legs and other characters mentioned, I believe it is H.diffinis. I would like permission to use it with credit to you on a thumbnail pictoral checklist I am creating for Fairfax County Sphingidae.

I learned on this site that of the main characteristics that differentiate this species from other, similar species is a clear discal cell.
