Hemaris diffinis
Based on dark upper surfaces of legs and other characters mentioned, I believe it is H.diffinis. I would like permission to use it with credit to you on a thumbnail pictoral checklist I am creating for Fairfax County Sphingidae.
See Hemaris comparisons on the page I recently completed for Frederick
County, VA, at http://www.silkmoths.bizland.com/vaFredericksph.htm

Using my image
You can indeed have permission to use my image, as long as you include a copyright notice "© 2004 Duncan Champney. All rights reserved." Send me an email to DuncanC@no_spam, and replace no_spam with "aol.com" and we can arrainge for a release. Note that I'm not sure the example image you have on your site (@http://www.silkmoths.bizland.com/diffinisjbt.jpg) IS an H. Diffinis. I learned on this site that of the main characteristics that differentiate this species from other, similar species is a clear discal cell. See the other images of this individual linked here for a discsussion and clear example of the clear discal cell.
