Found in tall grass, the underside has the same markings as the top but duller

Checkered Skipper
One of the genus Pyrgus. Either Common Checkered or White Checkered Skipper. I don't think they can be separated by photographs but I'll leave it for a Southeastern expert.

Looks more like a skipper (Hesperiidae) - look at the 'hooked' antennae rather than the simple clubs most nymphalids have.
