Lucanus capreolus ? male - Lucanus capreolus

The large mandibular size is typical of males, but the absence of the diagnostic male tooth on the mandible is characteristic of females. My guess is that this beetle is a male without the diagnostic tooth, but could the beetle possibly be a female with a large mandible? .
