Bee or Fly on Bird of Paradise - Brachymelecta californica - male

Bee or Fly on Bird of Paradise - Brachymelecta californica - Male
Surprise, Maricopa County, Arizona, USA
May 5, 2020
Size: 6 - 7 mm
Found in early morning on the flower stem of a Mexican Bird of Paradise plant. Was probably there overnight and was gone later in the day. Looks like a bee to me, but I can see on one pair of wings.
